What is The Recovery Process Like For a Root Canal?

Root canals have a reputation for being painful and daunting procedures. However, with modern advancements in dental technology, this is no longer the case. In fact, the recovery process is usually quite straightforward. This blog post will guide you through what to expect during the recovery process after a root canal.

Immediately After the Procedure

After your root canal procedure at Premier Endodontics of SouthPark, you might feel a bit of numbness in the area due to the local anesthesia. This is completely normal and the numbness should wear off within a few hours. During this time, it's important to avoid eating anything until the numbness has completely subsided to prevent biting your cheek or tongue.

  • Avoid hot food and drinks until the numbness wears off.
  • Do not chew or bite on the treated tooth until it has fully recovered.
  • Keep the area clean by maintaining good oral hygiene.

Once the numbness has worn off, you may experience some discomfort or mild pain. This is also normal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. If the pain persists or becomes severe, it's important to contact Dr. Katie Kickertz immediately.

The First Few Days

In the first few days following your root canal, it's essential to take care of the treated area to prevent any complications. You should continue to brush and floss regularly, but be gentle around the treated tooth to avoid any discomfort.

  • Avoid hard or chewy foods that could damage the temporary filling or crown.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to soothe any discomfort and keep the area clean.
  • Continue taking over-the-counter pain relievers as needed.

It's not uncommon to experience some swelling in the area. This can be managed by applying a cold compress to the outside of your mouth. If the swelling does not go down or becomes worse, contact Dr. Kickertz immediately.

One Week After the Procedure

By the end of the first week, any discomfort or swelling should have subsided. You should be able to return to your normal eating and oral hygiene habits. If you had a temporary filling or crown placed, this will be replaced with a permanent one by Dr. Kickertz.

  • Continue to maintain good oral hygiene to keep the area clean and prevent infection.
  • Schedule a follow-up appointment with Dr. Kickertz to ensure the tooth is healing properly.

Although the recovery process is usually smooth, complications can arise. If you experience severe pain or pressure, an uneven bite, visible swelling inside or outside your mouth, or an allergic reaction to medication, contact Dr. Kickertz immediately.

Long-Term Care

Once your root canal treatment is completed, it's important to take care of your oral health to prevent future issues. This includes regular check-ups and cleanings with Dr. Kickertz at Premier Endodontics of SouthPark.

  • Brush and floss regularly to maintain good oral hygiene.
  • Avoid hard or chewy foods that could damage your tooth.
  • Schedule regular check-ups and cleanings with Dr. Kickertz.

With proper care, a tooth that has had a root canal can last a lifetime. However, it's important to monitor the tooth and contact Dr. Kickertz if you notice any changes or discomfort.
